KALUNJI

Kalunji, scientifically known as Nigella Sativa or often referred to as black cumin, is a highly prized spice revered for its distinctive pungent flavor and rich, aromatic profile. Sourced directly from India’s prime agricultural regions, our Kalunji seeds undergo rigorous selection and processing to guarantee exceptional purity and potency, making them a superior choice for culinary, traditional, and health-focused applications.

Origin

Our premium Kalunji is primarily cultivated across the fertile northern plains of India, with key growing regions including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and parts of Rajasthan, where the optimal climate contributes to its distinctive characteristics.

Harvest Season

The principal harvest season for Kalunji typically falls between late winter and early spring, specifically from February to April, ensuring the seeds are collected at their peak maturity and flavor intensity.

Qualities & Grades

  • **Premium Grade (Sortex Cleaned):** Characterized by uniformly sized, jet-black seeds with extremely low foreign matter (less than 0.5%), high volatile oil content, and superior aroma, meticulously machine-cleaned and sortexed for maximum purity and quality.
  • **Standard Grade:** Offering good quality Kalunji with acceptable purity levels (foreign matter less than 1%), this grade maintains the authentic flavor and aroma, suitable for a wide range of culinary and industrial applications.

Characteristics

Kalunji seeds are small, matte black, and distinctively teardrop or triangular-shaped. They possess a complex flavor profile that is simultaneously pungent, slightly bitter, and peppery, with nuanced undertones of oregano, onion, and black pepper. When toasted or ground, they release a powerful, aromatic fragrance, rich in beneficial volatile oils, including thymoquinone.
